چکیده

s 343 Folia Primatol 2004;75:341–354 consumption is occasional or limited for Microcebus, Cheirogaleus and Mirza, gum is the dominant food source for Phaner and Allocebus. Craniofacial shape variations were analysed using geometric morphometrics: methods based on landmarks identification (Procrustes superimpositions) were chosen for skull shape analysis, and methods based on outline decomposition (elliptical Fourier functions) for the study of mandible shape. The morphospaces obtained at the level of the infraorder appear to be highly constrained by dietary habits, especially in the case of the mandibles. At the finer level of the Cheirogaleidae family, the analyses permit us (1) to separate craniomandibular shape variations associated with the two dietary categories and (2) among the omnivorous category, to distinguish the fluctuations associated with the percentage of gum consumption. Developmental response to cold stress in cranial morphology of Rattus: implications for the interpretation of climatic adaptation in fossil hominins.

Adaptation to climate occupies a central position in biological anthropology. The demonstrable relationship between temperature and morphology in extant primates (including humans) forms the basis of the interpretation of the Pleistocene hominin Homo neanderthalensis as a cold-adapted species. There are contradictory signals, however, in the pattern of primate craniofacial changes associated wi...

Developmental constraints on behavioural flexibility.

We suggest that variation in mammalian behavioural flexibility not accounted for by current socioecological models may be explained in part by developmental constraints. From our own work, we provide examples of constraints affecting variation in behavioural flexibility, not only among individuals, but also among species and higher taxonomic units. We first implicate organizational maternal eff...

Mouse models and the evolutionary developmental biology of the skull.

Understanding development is relevant to understanding evolution because developmental processes structure the expression of phenotypic variation upon which natural selection acts. Advances in developmental biology are fueling a new synthesis of developmental and evolutionary biology, but it remains unclear how to use developmental information that largely derives from a few model organisms to ...

JASs Invited Reviews

In spite of a long history of research in craniofacial biology the extent to which developmental cascades between the brain, the cranial base, and the face infl uences the evolution, development and variation of the skull, is not clear. is paper discusses aspects of these problems in terms a “systemsmodel” of morphological integration and modularity of human craniofacial morphology. is model pr...

In vivo bone strain and finite-element modeling of the craniofacial haft in catarrhine primates.

Hypotheses regarding patterns of stress, strain and deformation in the craniofacial skeleton are central to adaptive explanations for the evolution of primate craniofacial form. The complexity of craniofacial skeletal morphology makes it difficult to evaluate these hypotheses with in vivo bone strain data. In this paper, new in vivo bone strain data from the intraorbital surfaces of the supraor...
